KSP releases traffic safety checkpoint locations

KSP releases traffic safety checkpoint locations

(KFVS) - The Kentucky State Police will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints throughout the Post 1 district, to check drivers for compliance with laws including driving under the influence.

KSP uses traffic safety checkpoints to promote safety for drivers using the public roads and to provide a deterrent for those who violate laws contained in the Kentucky Revised Statutes.

The checkpoints will allow KSP the opportunity to periodically concentrate its efforts in checking for violations of Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws that will ultimately increase the safety of the citizens within the Commonwealth.

Drivers encountering a traffic safety checkpoint should have their operator’s license, vehicle registration receipt and proof of insurance readily accessible.

KSP has provided the traffic safety checkpoint locations in the Post 1 district below.

Graves High names winners of Trash to Treasure Recycled Art Contest

Graves High names winners of Trash to Treasure Recycled Art Contest

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School freshman Grant Marler, far left, recently won The “Trash to Treasure” contest, an annual school-wide competition inviting all students and staff to make art from recycled items.

The event educates students and the community about the importance of creatively dealing with the earth’s waste disposal issues. Marler used a bicycle rim for the center of a fan to create “Windmill.”

He made a pattern for the blades and cut them all out of old barn tin. The windmill’s pole was made from a piece of conduit from an old garage. He made the tail from an old plow seat and the stand from steel conduit that was being used for pipe. The wood helped anchor a piece of pipe connected to the fan piece. All materials came from a scrap trailer load that was scheduled to be recycled.  To hold the entire piece together, Marler used self-tapping screws and zip screws.

You can enter to win possible playhouse, ticket money to benefit Relay for Life

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - What do you call a building that’s four feet wide, eight feet long, and six feet tall with three windows, a shingled roof, and lap siding?

You could call it a playhouse for your kids or a shooting house for a hunter. … Whatever its name, on June 8, someone will call it “mine!”

The Graves County Schools Maintenance Department built it and the district’s Central Office Team has donated it for a drawing to benefit the Graves County Relay for Life Friday night, June 8.

Relay is scheduled for the Graves County High School campus that night. Tickets are $10 each and the winner does not need to be present to win.

To learn more or to buy a ticket, contact any member of the Graves County Schools’ Board of Education or employee of the Central Office or Maintenance Department or phone (270) 328-2656 or 674-2656.

Graves Central Elementary, High School collaborate on bilingual books

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School teacher Chris Thompson's Spanish 2 class recently created bilingual books in English and Spanish languages customized to each individual child and presented them to all three Graves County Central Elementary Kindergarten classes.

“It was a great collaboration between high school and elementary students, bringing in foreign languages to our young people. Each child received a book to take home,” said Nicki Thompson, a Central Kindergarten teacher.

High school teacher Chris Thompson, who is also Nicki Thompson’s mother-in-law, added:

The Spanish 2 high school students wrote about each child, according to questionnaires that the Kindergarten parents had filled out. In addition, each child received a Spanish coloring book that had been designed by one of the Spanish 2 students.”
