The students will talk to people, distribute brochures, and use other means to draw attention to the fact that drug abuse can be deadly and needs to stop. While they plan to carry that message to the streets, they also are asking businesses and other downtown Mayfield organizations to allow them to come inside and share the message there.

“We’re excited that our students really want to make our community a better place in which to live,” said Jennifer Morris, Family Resource Center director for Farmington and Symsonia elementary schools.

Graves Highs celebrates "We Read Week"

Graves Highs celebrates "We Read Week"

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School students Kinsey Camp and Lakyn Chalker look over the selection of books in the library at Graves County High School during “We Read Week.”

“We’re giving every student a book to keep as their own personal possession,” said librarian Lynda Hiles. “The library is set up like a book store, with genre tables. So, they can come in and pick a book. We’re giving them extra time in class all week to read that book. Hopefully, they’ll make a connection because the students get to pick a book they want to read, rather than one that’s required reading.”

The event is in its second year, funded through a Dollar General Stores literacy grant. Some local churches also donated books. Hiles said the event was a success last year.

“Many of them have said it’s the ‘coolest thing’ they’ve ever done in school. That’s pretty good, coming from a high school student,” she said with a laugh.
