Graves Co. family appears in Martina McBride video about surviving cancer

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - An unlikely set of circumstances for a Graves County family over the course of the past four years has turned what appeared at the time to be a pair of tragedies into a celebration of victory, family, love, God, and a hit country music video.

“I moved to Graves County in 1978, when I was 20 years old," said Melinda “Lindy” Sledge. "A lot people know me as Lindy Murphey Harmon. I lived in Graves for 26 years and worked as a nurse at both Jackson Purchase Medical Center and the old Mayfield Community Hospital."

Sledge spoke via telephone recently from her home in Franklin, Ky., about halfway between Bowling Green to the northeast and Nashville, Tenn., to the southwest.

“My brother, Dale Murphey, moved to Graves County in 1990, when he was in his early 30s,” she explained.

GCMS wins 7 straight games in one day, named 2011 State Softball Champions

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County Middle School Softball Team battled from the losers’ bracket to win seven games in a row and capture its second consecutive Middle School Softball State Championship.

It took place Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Panther Creek Park in Owensboro. The Lady Eagles overcame adversity and its opponents among 14 top-ranked softball programs across Kentucky.

The team faced its first misfortune before reaching the field, when starting second baseman Sarah Watts had to return home upon learning her brother had been in a tragic bus accident in Paducah and was being airlifted to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. With heavy hearts, the Watts family in their prayers, and the absence of their teammate, the Lady Eagles open up the double elimination state tournament against Bowling Green’s South Warren Middle School.
