Wingo Elementary receives $2,000 from local business

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Wingo Elementary School teachers Melanie Gilliam and Mona Shoulta accepted a $2,000 check from Wingo Dollar General Store manager Michelle Walker for the grant application the teachers submitted to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

The grant makes it possible for the northwestern Graves County school to buy several copies of a fluency program and a decoding program. Those programs will help students increase their reading comprehension and fluency while developing an enjoyable, lifelong interest to reach every level of reader in grades K-6.

Dollar General founder J.L. Turner left school after the third grade, when his father’s death necessitated his entry into the workforce to support his family. That led him to establish the foundation, which annually awards well over $1 million in grants into the communities it serves.

Lowes Elementary ‘family’ raises $3,000 for Natalie Baldwin family

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Lowes Elementary School raised more than $3,000 from tee-shirt sales, “Nat’s Army Day,” and the Wilkerson Lemonade Stand to help Natalie Baldwin’s family.

A 7-year-old second grader, Natalie was born without arms, a condition known as Amelia’s Syndrome. It has affected her back with scoliosis. The Shriners’ Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., has offered to pay for needed surgery. Local groups pledged to raise money to help support her family, as her parents, Jason and Atoshia Baldwin, must miss a number of work days to be with her for surgery and recovery.

“I appreciate all your support for Natalie and her family,” Lowes principal Cheryl Goodman wrote in an email to her staff. “Honestly, I was a little like Natalie and blown away by it! Several people said something to me about how everyone has pitched in to help.
