Sedalia Elementary builds outdoor classroom with Lowe's grant

Sedalia Elementary builds outdoor classroom with Lowe's grant

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Sedalia Elementary teacher Keri Dowdy's fourth grade environmental team will participate in the Disney Planet Challenge for the third consecutive year.

This year, Lowe's Home Improvement Center has provided the team a $5,000 grant and two volunteers, Dylan Williams and Mike Duncan of WindowsPlus, built a structure that Dowdy calls an outdoor classroom.

The two teams from previous years won Kentucky's competition. Last year's team placed third nationally.

“It’s a raised planter with benches,” said Dowdy. “Shupe’s Nursery donated peat moss and Carolyn Gargus from Shupe’s helped us with the work. Our environmental team worked hard to get it in shape!”

Currently, the planters are filled with soil and mulch and are ready for classes to plant. Other features include bird feeders, hummingbird features, a thermometer, a rain gauge and a storage box that has garden tools, seeds, potting soil, bird feed and buckets.

Graves Schools continue kindness, compassion through Rachel’s Legacy

Graves Schools continue kindness, compassion through Rachel’s Legacy

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County School District for the second consecutive year hosted Darrell Scott,  the father of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim in the notorious 1999 Columbine High School shootings.

The district scheduled him to speak three times Tuesday, Aug. 30. He addressed all students in grades 6-8 in the morning, followed by a training session for student leaders from those same grades. The 7 p.m. session in the Eagles’ Nest Gymnasium was earmarked as an opportunity for the public to hear the message with no admission charge.

The journals Rachel Scott left behind spoke of her desire to change the world through kindness and compassion. Darrell Scott brought that message to Graves County a year ago with Rachel’s Challenge and followed up on what has happened since with the presentation of Rachel’s Legacy.

This year’s program builds on last year’s foundation with five points.
