WKCTC's Commonwealth Middle College opens doors for high school students

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Many parents want their children to attend college, but worry about the cost. What if such a parent heard his child could take a dozen college courses free, guided by veteran educators for two years? Pure fantasy? Actually, it’s a description of Commonwealth Middle College at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah.

“When my dad got the letter, he was freaking out! It was really funny,” said Nicole Smith, a Graves County High School junior. “I’ll be the first in my family to graduate from college and high school.”

Smith and 19 classmates started the first of their final two years of high school recently in a distinctly different environment. Ten Paducah Tilghman students did the same.

“I was really hesitant about spending my junior and senior year of high school this way and I thought I’d miss all my friends,” she explained. “After I talked to my parents, we figured it’s a great opportunity.
