Driver killed when she loses control of car, hits tree

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - According to the Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon, 21-year-old Jennifer L. Gregory of Lowes died early Tuesday morning when she lost control of her car, ran off the road and hit a tree.

The sheriff said at 3:30 a.m. deputies responded to a single car accident on KY 849 West near the intersection of Burchard Road. When they arrived, deputies say they determined the car was eastbound on SR 849 West a high rate of speed when the driver lost control.

According to the sheriff, the car ran off the road, hit a tree and overturned where it came to rest on the passenger side. He said Gregory was ejected out of the back window of the car and the car came to a rest pinning Gregory underneath it.

Gregory was pronounced dead at the scene by Graves County Coroner Phillip McClain. Sheriff Redmon said Gregory was not wearing a seat belt.

73-year-old head of Moose Lodge charged with illegal possession of alcohol

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky State Police announced Monday the head of the Mayfield Moose Lodge was summoned to court after police seized large quantities of alcohol beverages from the lodge.

On Monday, police served a court summons on 73-year-old Herbert Ross of Mayfield. He was charged with illegal possession of alcohol in a dry territory.

Police say just after midnight on August 13, they received a complaint of underage drinking at the Moose Lodge on KY 131 north of Mayfield. They say after the first complaint, they received a second complaint reporting a large disturbance in the lodge's parking lot.

They say when officers arrived they could not find a disturbance, but an inspection of the club indicated the sale and distribution of alcohol.

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School Eagle football tickets will go on sale Tuesday, August 16 in the athletic office.

PSL holders can pick up their tickets and all other reserved seating will be offered on a first-come, first-served.

GCMS softball team wins 5 games in one day

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County Middle School Lady Eagle softball team recently began their season by winning five consecutive games in one day.

The team played at the Mike Miller Park in Draffenville and came out as champions of the 2011 Hot August Bash Tournament.

GCHS introduces new athletic director

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School has announced their new athletic director.

Doug Gloyd will replace Jim Simmons as the GCHS athletic director. Simmons retired and accepted a teaching position in Illinois.

Gloyed is a graduate of Logan Community County High School. He earned his bachelor's degree at Campbellsville College and a master's degree and Rank I Certification at Murray State University. He started is teaching and coaching career in 1995 at Franklin-Simpson Middle School and then moved to Mayfield Middle School from 1997 to 2000. He's continued to live in Mayfield since then and commuted to work the past 11 years.

“I feel so fortunate to have someone of Doug's character and experience" said Principal R.B. Mays. "I have not met anyone who has not said good things about him, and I think our community will really enjoy working with him.

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County High School soccer team and middle school softball team will both have games on Monday, August 15.

The GCHS girls' and boys' JV soccer will host Murray at 5:30 p.m.

The GCMS softball game against Marshall County will also start at 5:30 p.m.

GCHS juniors' ACT scores rank above state average

GCHS juniors' ACT scores rank above state average

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - According to the school district, Graves County High School juniors' ACT scores ranked above state average.

The 325 GCHS juniors' composite ACT score of 19.5 is seven tenths of a point higher than the state average of 18.8. Their science and math scores were 19.7 compared to the state average of 19.0.

The greatest margin for GCHS juniors was in english, where the 18.9 score bested the statewide 18.0 by nine-tenths of a point. The district says some 44.053 Kentucky juniors took the ACT last spring.

“In some areas of life, tenths of a point difference doesn’t mean much,” said Graves County Assistant Superintendent Carla Whitis. “However, Graves County High School’s margin of higher ACT scores across the board is significantly higher than the state averages.
