Mayfield family grateful for NICU close to home

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Seven years ago, Crystal Williams spent three months at the University of Louisville Hospital after her son was born premature.

Williams and her husband, Jeremy, didn't even try to have another child until she heard last year that Western Baptist Hospital was opening the region's first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“Both my son and stepson were premature, so we have a history of preemies,” said Williams, 25, of Mayfield. “I just had an overwhelming fear of having to go to Louisville and leave my children here, or having to leave my baby there.”

This time Williams had a smooth pregnancy until she developed preeclampsia at 22 weeks.

“I knew if I could make it to 32 weeks, then she could be born at Western Baptist and the NICU could take care of her,” Williams said. “We just prayed and prayed.

141 officers in Ky. honored in seat belt, child restraint enforcement ceremony

KENTUCKY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety honored 141 officers Wednesday for their efforts to increase the use of seat belts and child restraints.

The 2011 Governor's Occupant Protection Awards Ceremony was held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Lexington, Ky. Awards were presented to officers with the most occupant protection citations in each agency and division.

“Despite a wealth of data showing that seat belts and child restraints save lives, each year hundreds of unrestrained motorists lose their lives on Kentucky roadways,” said State Highway Engineer Steve Waddle, who presented the awards. “These officers, their departments and agencies render a great service for public safety by enforcing our occupant protection laws."

According to the Kentucky State Police, there were 760 total highway fatalities in Kentucky in 2010 with 598 killed in motor vehicles.

KYTC reminds drivers to stay alert to school zones as classes begin

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would like to remind drivers to use caution in school zones and around school buses taking children to and from school.

KYTC says over the past week they have had crews turn up and check school zone beacons to prepare for the start of school. The technicians are responsible for beacons at 45 schools scattered across Kentucky's 12 western counties.

Every year as students prepare to return to school, highway signal technicians check each school beacon to make sure it is working properly. They say some schools have four or more beacons that have to be turned on and checked for proper operation.

Highway officials are reminding drivers to be aware of school zones and obey reduced speed limits when beacons are flashing at the start and end of each school day.

Truck, tractor pull to benefit Christmas assistance programs

Truck, tractor pull to benefit Christmas assistance programs

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County Truck Pullers' Association will sponsor a truck and tractor pull on Saturday, August 20 to benefit the Mayfield and Graves County school's Christmas Assistance programs.

The pull will be at the Mayfield-Graves County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. and tickets will be available at the gate. Tickets are $10 each, $5 for children ages five to 12. Children four and under are admitted for free.

In its first three years, including concessions, the annual truck pull has raised more than $60,000 for school children. The money is divided equally among the 13 schools served by family resource and youth service centers in the country and city. The proceeds are used to provide Christmas gifts to underprivileged children and their families.

This year, the concession stand proceeds will benefit projects of Sedalia Elementary and Mayfield Elementary and middle schools.
