GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Orientation, kindergarten kick off and professional development events for back to school in Graves County have been scheduled for Monday, August 1.

The events include:

  • Graves County Middle School - Seventh grade orientation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Symsonia - Professional development for teachers grades K-3 at PAC with Carolyn Downing from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Symsonia - Professional development for teachers grades 4-6 at PAC with Carolyn Downing from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Lowes - Kindergarten kick off from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

KY 2192/Melber Rd. to be reopened

KY 2192/Melber Rd. to be reopened

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the bridge project over KY 1292/Melber Road is finished.

KYTC says the road should be reopened to normal traffic flow by noon on Monday.

The road was closed while crews replaced a bridge over a tributary of Mayfield Creek at mile point 2.36.

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Central Elementary and Wingo Elementary will hold kindergarten welcoming events on Sunday, July 31.

At Central, the Kindergarten Kick-Off will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

At Wingo, Welcome to Kindergarten will start at 2 p.m.

Preschool orientation, Sedalia's Back to School Night

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County preschool orientation and the Sedalia Back to School Night will be Thursday, July 28.

Parents of all preschoolers attending Graves County schools must meet at Central Elementary at 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. for orientation.

The Sedalia Back to School Night will include:

  • Preschool at 5 p.m.
  • Grades 1-3 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Grades 4-6 at 6 p.m.

Postal Service considers closing office in Graves Co.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The U.S. Postal Service has released a list of 3,700 post offices across the country that could be shut down to help save money.

The Postal Service introduced Tuesday the Village Post Office as a potential retail replacement option for affected communities around the nation.

Symsonia man one of 14 scholars chosen to study abroad

SYMSONIA, KY (KFVS) - Quentin Johnson of Symsonia is one of 14 University of Louisville scholars chosen to study abroad through the U.S. Student Fullbright Program.

The program is a prestigious international exchange scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Johnson, a spring 2011 summa cum laude graduate was awarded a Fullbright  English teaching assistantship. He will teach English to secondary school students in Malaysia.

UofL students have received 60 Fullbright Scholarships since 2003, which is more than any other university in Kentucky. Last year, the school ranked in the top 20 Fullbright-producing schools in the nation with 14 student winners.

Johnson was a political science major while at UofL.
