Graves High School reschedules performance of "Seussical"

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Drama Department at Graves County High School has canceled their evening performance of "Seussical" on Monday, May 9.

The performance has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m.

There will be an in-school performance on Monday, May 9 at 11:30 a.m.

Middle school earns first place, best-selling author visit

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Graves County Middle School students won a visit from best-selling author Patrick Carman after winning first place in Scholastic Book Fair's National Middle School Student Crew contest.

Students will meet the author during a school-wide event on Tuesday, May 10 where he will talk about his stories, answer questions from the students and sign copies of his books

The competition encourages students to run their own book fair by creating contests, designing advertising campaigns, hosting activities and developing themes that were aimed at getting kids to visit the book fair.

The school will also get $2,000 in books and merchandise from Scholastic.

For the book fair last fall, student crew members chose the theme "Reading is Sweet" and transformed their library into a "Sweet Read Shoppe" that included a giant gumball machine, lollipops, candy and more.

Sedalia Elementary 6th graders perform "We Haz Jazz"

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Sixth graders at Sedalia Elementary School performed recently at the Graves County Schools' Performing Arts Center.

The students performed several different styles from Dixieland to Bebop to Swing and from different artists like Louis Armstrong, Dizzie Gillespie and John Coltraine.

Students learned history and drama as they worked to produce the play.

Graves Central Elementary students perform "Annie Jr."

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Members of the Drama Club at Graves County Central Elementary School recently presented "Annie Jr." at the district's Performing Arts Center.

"Annie Jr." is a condensed version of the Broadway play "Annie." Fifth and sixth graders performed in the play and teachers Patsy Riley and Amy Murphey are club sponsors and directed the production which featured vintage costumes and props.

Bethel University choir visits Graves High School

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Students in Graves County High School's Fine Arts/Health Science Academy recently saw "Renaissance."

The musical "Renaissance" is a choir of 16 students from Bethel University's Performing Arts Department singing a mixture of energetic and solemn music.

GCHS principal and Bethel graduate R.B. Mays introduced the choir and noted that the university provides scholarships with the same pattern as athletics.

The Bethel Performing Arts Center is located in the former First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in McKenzie, Tenn.

Concord Elementary receives grant, launches program to fight obesity

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Concord Elementary received a grant from the Western Baptist Hospital and will use it to launch Project Fit America this fall.

Concord is the fourth school to receive the $16,000 grant from the hospital. It will go toward indoor and outdoor fitness equipment, teacher training and support materials for the physical education curriculum.

The outdoor equipment wil be available for community members to use to get in shape.

Vice President and Chief medical officer of Western Baptist Patrick Winthrow, M.D. said the elementary fitness program provides the perfect vehicle for exercise and nutrition education for children and their families.

"Childhood obesity is on the rise and Kentucky leads the nation in smoking," said Winthrow.

Lowes' students portray little rascals in 'Our Gang'

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Students at Lowes Elementary School recently presented their first theatrical production in the Graves County Schools' Performing Arts Center.

The students performed in a live comedy called "Actin' Up," which recreated the "Our Gang" movies of the 1930s, later broadcasted on TV as "The Little Rascals."

Actors included fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the Drama Club.
