Sedalia Elementary students participate in Native American Day

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Sedalia Elementary students Wayne Prentice and Brandon Glover pose by the totem pole at their school’s annual Native American Day.

Students were led through various stations that taught them about shelters, dances, games, and culture of Native American tribes. Totem poles were often used as a way to tell family history.

Several of the students then made a presentation on what they learned at the October Graves County Board of Education meeting.

Graves Highs celebrates "We Read Week"

Graves Highs celebrates "We Read Week"

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School students Kinsey Camp and Lakyn Chalker look over the selection of books in the library at Graves County High School during “We Read Week.”

“We’re giving every student a book to keep as their own personal possession,” said librarian Lynda Hiles. “The library is set up like a book store, with genre tables. So, they can come in and pick a book. We’re giving them extra time in class all week to read that book. Hopefully, they’ll make a connection because the students get to pick a book they want to read, rather than one that’s required reading.”

The event is in its second year, funded through a Dollar General Stores literacy grant. Some local churches also donated books. Hiles said the event was a success last year.

“Many of them have said it’s the ‘coolest thing’ they’ve ever done in school. That’s pretty good, coming from a high school student,” she said with a laugh.

Graves High students visited by Ecuadorian guitarist

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Classical guitarist Terry Pazmino of Ecuador is shown playing for students at Graves County High School recently.

GCHS teacher Eva Reid, who teaches the Spanish language to students, invited and hosted him at the school.

Parzmino has been playing guitar for more than 50 years. He has toured five continents and recently performed at Carnage Hall. He is currently touring the United States, including concerts in New York and Boston.

“We’re very lucky to have him as our guest and thank Mrs. Reid for arranging his visit here,” said Graves County Schools Performing Arts Center manager Donna Gream. “Hearing from another culture is always interesting and his instrumental skill is world class. Our students enjoyed his performance so much, they gave him a standing ovation.”
