29-year-old charged with DUI after police pull him over

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Sheriff Dewayne Redmon reports Wednesday a 29-year-old part-time resident of Mayfield and Chicago was arrested for DUI.

Cortes Thornton was charged with DUI.

Redmon said that one of his deputies conducted a traffic stop on K303 just south of Mayfield around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. He said Thornton admitted to smoking marijuana before driving to Mayfield from his home on KY303 in the South Highland community.

Investigators responded and interviewed Thornton and then obtained a search warrant at the residence. Redmon said officers found numerous firearms including a handgun that was stolen in Mayfield in late November during a burglary. They said an amount of marijuana was also found inside the home with digital scales and other paraphernalia related to the sale of marijuana. An undisclosed amount of U.S. Currency was also found.

According to the sheriff, Thornton had previously been arrested in Graves County in 2008 and was charged with attempted murder and other drug related charges. In 2009 he was arrested in Graves County and was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance first degree and was given a suspended five years of prison with five years of unsupervised probation. He was ordered by Judge Starks to permanently stay out of Kentucky.

Thornton was charged with three counts of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, trafficking in marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, receiving stolen property firearm, probation violation of a felony offense, DUI and other traffic charges.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted in the investigation and arrest by the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office and The Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
