Wingo students gain dance opportunity from VSA of Kentucky

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Wingo Elementary School recently received an award from VSA Arts of Kentucky that made it possible for dance artist Karen Balzer to work for the past month with the second and fifth grade classes on creating choreography to pieces from the circus musical “Barnum.”

The Wingo second graders will perform as clowns; they’re shown rehearsing here.

The fifth graders will portray tightrope walkers. Balzer is working with both traditional students and students with special needs for a regional schools’ dance assembly program at Lovett Auditorium on the campus of Murray State University at 9 a.m. Friday, April 19. It’s part of the Jackson Purchase Dance Company’s production of Spring Dancefest.

Graves High students learn consequences of impaired driving during 'Ghost Out'

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School student Karlee Riley interacts with “The Grim Reaper” as her classmates watch.

The costumed character removed one student every 20 minutes on the day of the school’s “Ghost Out” and took them out of sight until the end of the school day.

The students removed from class were brought back at the end of the day in a sobering presentation for the entire student body in the Eagles’ Nest Gymnasium.

Here, Payne and Tucker look at the mock collision set up near the main entrance to the school.

The numbers reflect the deaths of one motorist every 20 minutes in America, due to drunk or drugged driving.

Grave County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon’s office and the GCHS Youth Services Center teamed up for the eye-opening project.

Graves County High School freshmen Mckenzie Payne and Kendall Tucker said of their school’s “Ghost Out”:“It’s scary.”
