Soldier’s homecoming surprises his children, Graves Central Elementary

Soldier’s homecoming surprises his children, Graves Central Elementary

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - "Daddy!" That was the one word reaction from Garrett Wilson when his father, Staff Sgt. Joshua Wilson of the Kentucky National Guard, walked into Garrett’s fifth grade classroom at Graves County Central Elementary School recently, two days ahead of schedule.

Looking on were Garrett’s sisters, 6-year-old first grader Maddy and 3-year-old Kelsey. Their mother, Gretchen Wilson was standing behind her husband and holding their younger daughter.

Joshua Wilson had just completed a six-month deployment of military service in Iraq, where he has spent much of the past two years. Principal Stephanie Sullivan and Maddy’s teacher, Kate Gay, worked with Gretchen Wilson to make the homecoming a learning experience for all of the school’s 430 students as well as a surprise for the Wilson children.

(KFVS) - The Kentucky State Police are offering some Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters.

“Halloween is traditionally a time for children to have fun, but most often it is the children who can be injured by situations that are avoidable,” said Lt. David Jude, spokesperson for KSP. “Be sure your child’s costume does not obstruct their vision and is not so cumbersome that they can trip over it.”

Jude says on Halloween evening we're placing our children in probably some of the most dangerous traffic situations you could imagine.

Graves Co. family appears in Martina McBride video about surviving cancer

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - An unlikely set of circumstances for a Graves County family over the course of the past four years has turned what appeared at the time to be a pair of tragedies into a celebration of victory, family, love, God, and a hit country music video.

“I moved to Graves County in 1978, when I was 20 years old," said Melinda “Lindy” Sledge. "A lot people know me as Lindy Murphey Harmon. I lived in Graves for 26 years and worked as a nurse at both Jackson Purchase Medical Center and the old Mayfield Community Hospital."

Sledge spoke via telephone recently from her home in Franklin, Ky., about halfway between Bowling Green to the northeast and Nashville, Tenn., to the southwest.

“My brother, Dale Murphey, moved to Graves County in 1990, when he was in his early 30s,” she explained.
