Deadline announced to buy engraved bricks for Sedalia school

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The deadline to buy engraved bricks in a special project at Sedalia Elementary School will be Friday, April 29.

Sedalia's plans to use the bricks as a walk way in front of the school. The engraved bricks will leave a lasting legacy for Sedalia's supporters.

“We are happy and excited about all the people who have supported this project by buying bricks,” said principal Robert Braden. “It’s clear that our alumni and supporters feel a real connection to this school. We also want to let people know that we do have a deadline coming up. If they’ve been thinking about buying a brick they need to know we have to wind up this part of the project April 29.”

Each brick is 4 inches by 8 inches and can be engraved with up to three lines of text, 16 characters per line.

Concord Elementary receives grant, launches program to fight obesity

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Concord Elementary received a grant from the Western Baptist Hospital and will use it to launch Project Fit America this fall.

Concord is the fourth school to receive the $16,000 grant from the hospital. It will go toward indoor and outdoor fitness equipment, teacher training and support materials for the physical education curriculum.

The outdoor equipment wil be available for community members to use to get in shape.

Vice President and Chief medical officer of Western Baptist Patrick Winthrow, M.D. said the elementary fitness program provides the perfect vehicle for exercise and nutrition education for children and their families.

"Childhood obesity is on the rise and Kentucky leads the nation in smoking," said Winthrow.

Lowes' students portray little rascals in 'Our Gang'

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Students at Lowes Elementary School recently presented their first theatrical production in the Graves County Schools' Performing Arts Center.

The students performed in a live comedy called "Actin' Up," which recreated the "Our Gang" movies of the 1930s, later broadcasted on TV as "The Little Rascals."

Actors included fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the Drama Club.

Graves County Elementary School starts a volleyball league

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Volleyball at Graves County Elementary School will start on April 16 at 9 a.m. in the Graves County Middle School gym.

The matches are expected to last until 2 p.m. on most Saturdays of competitions. Regular season matches are scheduled for April 23 and April 30. Admission is free during the regular season.

Saturday, May 14 will be the post-season tournament at 9 a.m. Admission will be $1 per person and $2 per family.

Mark Rogers, organizer of the league for fifth and sixth grade girls, said playing at the elementary level will help participants when they reach middle and high school, where Graves County already has a team in place.

Elementary schools participating in the league's first year include Central, Fancy Farm, Farmington, Lowes, Sedalia and Symsonia.

160 students participate in 2011 All Kids In Free Spring Fling Swim, Fun Camp

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Around 160 students at Graves County and Mayfield Independent Middle public schools attended the 2011 All Kids In Free Spring Fling Swim and Fun Camp April 4-8.

The camp included a wide-range of activities over a four hour period each day at Graves County Middle School with half of the kids in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Activities included swimming, arts and crafts, CPR and first aid training, inflatable play stations and a showing of Animal Tales.

The two school districts and the YMCA partnered together for the program with all funding coming from All Kids In benefit auctions.

Fancy Farm Elementary PTA to hold fundraiser, winner gets $10,000

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The Fancy Farm Elementary PTA is holding a fundraiser and someone could win $10,000.

The Fancy Farm Money Supper will be at the Fancy Farm Knights of Columbus Hall on Saturday, April 16 at 6 p.m.

You can buy tickets for the grand prize of $10,000 in advance at Fancy Farm Elementary School. Tickets are $50 a piece and gurantee a good mean and a chance to win big.

The PTA is giving everyone the option of splitting the price of one ticket between a group of people, then splitting the cash prize.

Cuba Elementary 5th graders write letters for Grandparent of the Year

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Fifth graders at Cuba Elementary School wrote letters about their grandparents for the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year writing contest.

Students used their writing skills to write the letters about their grandparents and explaining why they should be chosen as the Grandparent of the Year.

Fifth Grader Michael Larkin was the school winner.
