Wingo Elementary 3rd grader grows colossal cabbage | Home & Garden
GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Vegetable gardening can be a fun and rewarding way to learn about nature and healthy food.
Bonnie Plants started the Third Grade Cabbage Program where students learn about gardening and learn the value of growing food. She hopes the program fosters a lifelong love of gardening.
Locally, each third grade student from Wingo Elementary School was given a cabbage plant to take home with instructions on how best to grow and care for their cabbage plant, along with directions for entering a contest. Each classroom has one winner and that winner's entry is sent to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for a random drawing. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one winner in each state.
The winner in teacher LeAnna Pritchard's Wingo Elementary third grade class is Everett Yates. His cabbage plant weighed 23 pounds. This picture will be sent, along with an entry form, to allow him to compete at the state level.
