GCHS students participate in Annual Day of Service, raise more than $3,000

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Nearly 1,400 Graves County High School students performed community service at about 97 work sites throughout the county on Friday, April 29.

Teacher Michelle McKee led the planning, organization and implementation of the project that Principal R.B. Mays thought of.

“I think we had a very successful day. Students were able to touch a lot of different areas of the community: government, churches, the elderly,” McKee said. “We thank everybody involved and know we’re teaching good lessons here. I believe these students will volunteer now throughout their lives. It was a great day and a great cause for hope for the future. It’s obvious Mr. Mays’ idea is a wonderful one and we’re building a tradition with it each year.”

Activities include: playing kickball with elementary students, beautifying parks and filling sandbags to counteract flooding.

Middle school earns first place, best-selling author visit

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Graves County Middle School students won a visit from best-selling author Patrick Carman after winning first place in Scholastic Book Fair's National Middle School Student Crew contest.

Students will meet the author during a school-wide event on Tuesday, May 10 where he will talk about his stories, answer questions from the students and sign copies of his books

The competition encourages students to run their own book fair by creating contests, designing advertising campaigns, hosting activities and developing themes that were aimed at getting kids to visit the book fair.

The school will also get $2,000 in books and merchandise from Scholastic.

For the book fair last fall, student crew members chose the theme "Reading is Sweet" and transformed their library into a "Sweet Read Shoppe" that included a giant gumball machine, lollipops, candy and more.

GCHS football team helps sandbag, save home

WEST PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Graves County High School football players helped unload as many as 1,000 sandbags to protect a home from flooding.

"There was about 16 inches of water that we had to wade through in order to just get to the house," said Michael Martin, a project organizer. "We would set up an assembly line, passing the bag from person to person."

Martin also said the team worked from about 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and without them it would have taken several more hours to get the job done.

The GCHS baseball team did similar work at another, nearby site.
