5 Kentucky State Troopers honored

FRANKFORT, KY (KFVS) - Five Kentucky State troopers from the Mayfield Post were honored Monday in Frankfort, including three for their life saving acts.

KSP details their accomplishment below.

Trooper Brad Ramsey was awarded Post 1 Trooper of the Year for his work during 2011.  During 2011, Trooper Ramsey issued 1,490 citations, investigated 43 criminal cases, and made 222 criminal arrests.  A native of Madisonville, Trooper Ramsey is a nine year veteran of the Kentucky State Police.  He is assigned to McCracken County.

Detective John Sims received the award for Post 1 Detective of the Year for his work during 2011.  Detective Sims logged over 2000 hours during the year investigating numerous major crimes as well as assisting with other investigations.  Sims also investigated dozens of “Internet Crimes Against Children” also known as ICAC complaints.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School senior Ryan Noffsinger will continue to be a part of a national champion co-ed cheerleading squad.

He recently signed with Morehead State University, which recently won its 20th national championship. Noffsinger has been a member of the multi-state and national champion Graves County Co-Ed Competition Cheerleaders.

“We are extremely proud that Ryan has made the Morehead State University co-ed cheerleading team,” said his Graves County coach, Jon Summerville. “All of Ryan's hard work has allowed him to continue his cheerleading career at a multiple-time UCA national champion cheer team. Ryan is an extremely talented young man who developed into an outstanding leader for this year’s team. We are going to miss him, but we know he will represent Graves County well.”

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School’s 27th annual graduation commencement will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, in the Eagles’ Nest Gymnasium.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. Chair seats are reserved for parents with the tickets they receive from their children; all other seating takes place on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors close at 7 p.m. for the processional, which usually lasts about 20 minutes. After the graduation candidates are seated, spectators who have been waiting are allowed to filter into the gymnasium. To accommodate spectators, parking is available in the lot adjoining the soccer and football fields. That area is accessible from Jimtown Road.

Wingo Elementar teacher selected for Challenger Learning Center award

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A Wingo Elementary School reading and science teacher was recognized as the sixth outstanding educator at the Challenger Learning Center.

Staff from the Challenger Center recognized Nakia Brown during a surprise presentation at a Wingo Elementary school-wide assembly on April 30. During the presentation they gave her a framed certificate and a $100 gift certificate for science and math supplies donated by Travis School Equipment in Draffenville.

In addition the Graves County School District also receives one free mission for the 2012-2013 school year to the Challenger Learning Center in Paducah.

“The Challenger Learning Center program is a comprehensive educational experience for students,” said Melissa Duncan, media contact at West Kentucky Community and Technical College. “We created this annual award to show our appreciation to the educators who help make our program so successful. We are excited to present this award to Ms. Brown.”

Charlie Johnson Dinner to honor Gregg Hussey, late Bobby Finstad

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Fourth Annual Charlie Johnson Heritage Dinner will present Bro. Gregg Hussey with the “Charlie Award.”

It’s presented each year to an individual who makes a difference in the community by exhibiting the Y’s four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The Y also will honor the late Bobby Finstad with the James McKelvey Award for Perseverance.

The dinner will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at the Mayfield First Presbyterian Church Family Life Center. Tickets are available for a donation of any amount at the YMCA, 1545 Cuba Road, Mayfield. Proceeds will help fund the YMCA’s Summer Camp Financial Assistance Program.

Last year, the Y provided assistance to 15 community children so their families could afford to send them to summer camp. This year’s goal is to provide assistance to send 20 children to camp.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School junior Lucas Trent Campbell will serve as a page this summer in the U.S. Senate, thanks to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The Republican Senator’s web site says the experience “allows Pages to experience a myriad of new ideas, perspectives, and issues. Pages meet some of the Nation's most prominent leaders and witness firsthand the political debates of the United States Senate, often referred to as the ‘greatest deliberative body in the world.’ Page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional Complex. Other duties include taking messages for Members, calling them to the phone, preparing the Chamber for Senate sessions, and carrying bills and amendments to the desk.”
