Graves High junior to serve as U.S. Senate page

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School junior Lucas Trent Campbell will serve as a page this summer in the U.S. Senate, thanks to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The Republican Senator’s web site says the experience “allows Pages to experience a myriad of new ideas, perspectives, and issues. Pages meet some of the Nation's most prominent leaders and witness firsthand the political debates of the United States Senate, often referred to as the ‘greatest deliberative body in the world.’ Page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional Complex. Other duties include taking messages for Members, calling them to the phone, preparing the Chamber for Senate sessions, and carrying bills and amendments to the desk.”

Symsonia girl offers nurturing hands to raise money

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Symsonia Elementary third grader Laniya Yarber expressed an interest in helping others a while back.

She asked her mother how she could. Before long, she had raised $300 through an on-line auction to buy toys for children at the Lighthouse shelter in Mayfield. Now, Laniya’s Nurturing Hands is a Facebook page and she asks others to help her fight cancer by raising funds “handled with a loving touch.”

“We’re trying to get more people for Relay for Life and get other kids to help us,” she said. “And, for Easter I’m going to take arts and crafts to Lighthouse to make things with the kids there.”

Her principal, Lisa Gamble, said everyone at Symsonia Elementary is proud of Laniya for her giving heart and hard work of putting it into action. Mayfield Mayor Teresa Cantrell will honor Laniya at the April city council meeting.

American Red Cross asks you to share your favorite memory

(KFVS) - In honor of March being Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross is asking you to share your favorite Red Cross memory.

All month long, they will be looking for special, personal stories of hope. You can tell them what it was like to volunteer or why it's meaningful to you to give when disaster strikes.

The Red Cross says whether you’ve donated in the aftermath of a disaster, given blood, taken a class or received help in an emergency, everyone’s got a story to share – one that could inspire others to make a difference, too.

You can click here to submit your story online.

For more information, you can visit the American Red Cross online at www.redcross.org.

Wingo Elementary 6th grader serves as state Rep. Nesler’s legislative page

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Wingo Elementary sixth grader Trevor Grant, son of Jonathan and Michele Grant, recently served as a legislative page at the state capitol in Frankfort for state Rep. Fred Nesler.

Earlier in the school year, Trevor submitted an application to participate to Rep. Nesler. It included an essay in response to the prompt, "Why I Would Like to Be a Legislative Page" and a piece of art he created that is related to the work of the Wingo Elementary Family Resource Center.

Trevor joined some 164 other students from across the Commonwealth for Legislative Page Day. The Family Resource and Youth Services Centers Coalition of Kentucky sponsored the unique experience.

"I learned more about how our government works since I was able to actually spend some time on the floor of the House of Representatives,” Trevor said. He concluded with a broad smile, “It was a great day."
