MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - The 2011 Mayfield-Graves County Youth Leadership Class learned about their local government recently.'

The YLC students participated in a mock city council meeting with Mayfield Mayor Teresa Cantrell presiding where each student played a role, from city council member to city attorney to concerned citizen.

Former Police Chief and Sheriff John Davis then showed a video talked about the history of Mayfield and Graves County. Students then went to the Graves County Courthouse where they watched Judge Deborah Crooks preside over district court.

Before lunch the group heard from elected officials about the county government. Speaking at the courthouse were  Judge/Executive Tony Smith, Lana Thomas of pre-trial services, Sheriff Dewayne Redmon, County Attorney John Cunningham, Susan Jackson of juvenile justice, and County Clerk Barry Kennemore.

Students ended their visit with a tour through the Graves County Jail.

The YLC travelled to Frankfort in February to learn about the state government.
