MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Mid-Continent University has a men's soccer and volleyball update.
According to the university, missed opportunities cost the men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars (1-1) missed an open goal twice – once in each half – on Tuesday as the Oakland City Mighty Oaks (1-1) took a 1-0 win at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Sports Information Director Timothy Shay said Jamison Imhoff had a chance to put the Cougars up early in the match, but his shot slid wide in the sixth minute, and the match remained scoreless. For much of the remainder of the first half, the Mighty Oaks controlled play, as the Cougars had trouble stringing passes together to keep possession. Jonatas Polesello, however, was on his game early, keeping the Cougars in the match, and the Mighty Oaks off the scoreboard, and at intermission, the match remained scoreless.
According to Shay, in the second half, the Mighty Oaks continued to frustrate Mid-Continent’s attempts to sustain pressure, and on the offensive end, they remained dangerous. In the 55th minute, Polesello was forced to make a diving save on a chance by Nick Little to keep the sheet clean, but in the 64th minute, Oakland City capitalized. Adam Sell headed home a corner kick off the foot of Aljosa Stankovic to put Oakland City up 1-0. Down the stretch, the Cougars pressured, but were unable to generate much until a flurry of activity in the box with less than three minutes left. The Cougars got four opportunities, but the final result was an offside against Gilles Nziengui, and the Mighty Oaks held on for the shutout win, 1-0.
Byron Baamonde (1-1) earned the win in goal for Oakland City, while Polesello (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars.
Shay said the road does not get easier from here for Mid-Continent, as they play their first road match of the season on Saturday night, when they head to Marshall, Mo. to do battle with the NAIA #10 Missouri Valley College Vikings (1-1-1). Kick-off of the match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
According to the university, the Mid-Continent University volleyball team (4-3) will continue their season on Thursday night, Sept. 6, when they head back to Arkansas, this time to Paragould, to take on the Pioneers of Crowley's Ridge College at 7 p.m.
