Superintendent's retirement to be marked with reception May 20

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County Schools’ Superintendent Pete Galloway will retire this summer after a career of some 41 years as an educator in the Graves County School District, the past five as superintendent.

A Graves County native, he also spent his entire time as a public school student within the district.

Colleagues, family, friends, and members of the general public are invited to celebrate his retirement with him at an open house. It will be held in the Graves County Schools’ Performing Arts Center Gallery. That is located at the corner of Graves County High School nearest the Ky. Highway 121 entrance. The reception will take place between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 20.

Graves tennis trio advance in 2013 postseason play

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County's trio of (4) Preston Simmons (pictured at right)-Mitchell Wiggins and (4) Emily Whitnell recently advanced to the semifinals of the First Region Tennis Tournament.

The Eagle teams found their Lone Oak competition as good as advertised. Whitnell played the No. 1 girls’ singles seed from Lone Oak while Simmons-Wiggins played the No. 1 boys’ doubles seed from Lone Oak. This is Simmons-Wiggins’ second consecutive appearance in the regional tennis semifinals, while it’s Simmons’ third appearance.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County will host a senior all-star high school boys’ basketball game at Graves County Middle School at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, and a senior all-star girls’ basketball game at 3 p.m.

Coaching the boys’ teams will be Terry Birdsong (Graves County), Bruce Lane (Calloway County), Brian O'Neill (Carlisle County), and Henry Edwards (Hickman County). 

Coaching the girls’ game will be Amy Carrico (Graves County), Ember Wright (Carlisle County), Rechelle Turner (Murray), and Joseph Simmons (Marshall County).

GCHS students convert items from 'Trash to Treasure' for 2013 recycled art contest

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County High School’s Trash to Treasure Recycled Art Contest is an annual, school-wide competition inviting all high school students at all grade levels to make artistic creations from recycled or reused items.

The event seeks to educate students and the community about the importance of creatively dealing with the planet's waste issues. The idea is to increase environmental awareness and to encourage recycling and sustainable practices at schools and throughout the community.

Zumbathon fundraiser set for GCMS volleyball team

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A zumbathon is coming up, sponsored by the Graves County Middle School Lady Eagles Volleyball Team.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get fit, have fun, and win great door prizes. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The zumbathon will take place at the Graves County Middle School gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25.
