KYTC plans to pre-treat roads against oncoming winter weather

WESTERN KENTUCKY (KFVS)  - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 Highway Crews plan to pre-treat area highways to prepare for a threat of freezing rain, sleet, and/or snow that is expected to sweep through the region on Thursday night into Friday morning.

Drivers are urged to closely monitor the local weather forecast for updates as the winter weather system approaches. KYTC says drivers should be alert for slow moving trucks during daylight hours today and Thursday as crews go about their work spraying brine to prepare roadways for this event.

Pre-treating involves spraying a brine solution on roadways that dries to leave a fine powder of salt. That salt coating is then available to be activated as precipitation starts to fall during the early hours of a snow/ice event.

(KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says some highway crews are planning to pre-treat roads in anticipation of winter precipitation Tuesday afternoon and night.

The National Weather Service has placed portions of Western Kentucky under a Winter Weather Advisory until 2 a.m. on Wednesday. An area of wintry mix that is expected to hit northwest Tennessee could move northward to impact a number of Kentucky counties. The forecast includes a chance of sleet, freezing rain, and/or snow south of a line from about Mayfield to near Owensboro.

Temperatures have risen to near 30 degrees allowing the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Christian County Highway Crew to pre-treat highways in the southern half of the county.

According to KYTC, Lyon County and Trigg County are primarily focusing their pre-treating efforts primarily on bridges and overpasses. Other counties will be considering pre-treating if temperatures and other weather conditions allow.

KYTC seeks public input on 20-year plan

KYTC seeks public input on 20-year plan

(KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Department is in the process of updating the Kentucky Long Range Transportation Plan.

According to KYTC, the questions they are asking as they update the plan include:

  • In 2035, what will be our transportation needs for Kentucky?
  • Will our focus be on maintaining and improving existing roadways, constructing new roads, or issues concerning other modes of transportation?

In determining the transportation needs for all areas of Kentucky over the next two decades, KYTC says the updated plan will consider changes in communities, freight movement, financial resources, economic development, rural and urban transportation, the environment and other transportation issues that are impacting drivers.

They say the new plan will be an overarching policy guide with goals, objectives and strategies to address the core transportation opportunities and challenges facing each of us.
