Asphalt paving on US 45 north of Mayfield to begin

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a contractor will paving asphalt along US 45 in Graves County north of Mayfield starting this week.

According to KYTC, the asphalt paving project runs along US 45/Mayfield-Paducah Road from the south intersection with KY 1241 at mile point 20.789 extending northward to about the 28 mile marker near the Pittman Road intersection, a distance of about 7.2 miles.

The Jim Smith Contracting Company, LLC, of Grand Rivers will be the prime contractor on this $3,066,952 highway improvement project. KYTC says work along this section of US 45 is expected to take about three to four weeks to finish, weather permitting.

KYTC says drivers should use appropriate caution where equipment, flaggers and construction personnel will be on the road in close proximity to traffic flow.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County Middle School seventh and eighth grade boys interested in playing baseball for the school team should report to the Graves County High School baseball field for tryouts Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 6 and 7, starting each evening at 6 o’clock.

Kentucky 'Click It or Ticket' campaign cites thousands of drivers

(KFVS) - The Click It or Ticket campaign in Kentucky ran from May 21 through June 3 and cited over 19,000 motorists for not buckling up.

According to the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, the campaign is supported annually in Kentucky by over 220 state and local law enforcement agencies.

KOHS says the purpose of the campaign is to encourage motorists to abide by the state's seat belt law. There were 642 checkpoints set up for Click It or Ticket, and as a result of those checkpoints, officials made arrests for drunk driving, felony and drug arrests. Other arrests made at the checkpoints related to speeding, reckless driving and recovering stolen vehicles.

Transportation Secretary, Mike Hancock, says that the purpose of the campaign is not to write tickets, but to save the lives of motorists. He also says that the campaign helps to educate motorists on the importance of wearing a seat belt.

Kentucky tries campaign to raise traffic safety awareness

FRANKFORT, KY (KFVS) - Due to what is being called a dramatic increase in traffic violations and fatalities in the state of Kentucky, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is teaming up with local law enforcement officials for the "Blue Lights Across the Bluegrass" campaign.

KOHS director, Bill Bell, says law enforcement will be out in full force monitoring the roadways and citing those who are in violation of traffic safety laws. Officials will be cracking down all over the state of Kentucky, but special emphasis will be given to those areas of the state that have seen the most traffic fatalities and violations.

Some of the most common reasons contributing to traffic fatalities and accidents in the Bluegrass State include distracted driving, impaired driving, not wearing a seat belt or not wearing a helmet.

The campaign will run throughout the month of July.

Traffic Diversion to begin Wednesday on KY 303/Cuba Road

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced a traffic diversion for KY 303/Cuba Road near Mayfield will be extended at 8 a.m. on June 27.

Contractors will lower the existing road bed of KY 303 to update to the new grade. The diversion extension is a part of the KY 80 Bypass Project near KY 303 which began on April 10.

Traffic on KY 303/Cuba Road will run throughout the summmer.

KSP kicks off Operation B.L.U.E. Lights

KSP kicks off Operation B.L.U.E. Lights

(KFVS) - Operation B.L.U.E. Lights is the summer enforcement campaign for the Kentucky State Police that began June 1 and is picking up speed as it sweeps across the state.

The campaign is designed to bring attention to unsafe driving behaviors in an effort to offset the recent spike in traffic deaths on Kentucky roadways.

B.L.U.E. is an acronym designed to remind drivers to focus on these driving-related attributes:

B = Basic traveling safety and vehicle maintenance
L = Lower speed in work zone areas
U = Undivided attention on the road & look for motorcycles
E = Enforcement of speed, DUI and occupant protection

KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer said the agency implemented this multi-faceted approach to address the increasing number of fatalities on Kentucky roadways.  KSP will uses high visibility patrol in crash corridors and safety check points combined with a public awareness campaign to reach the motoring public.

Lane restriction on KY 97 in Graves County starting Monday

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict traffic to one lane on KY 97 in Graves County, Ky. on Monday and Tuesday, June 4 and June 5.

It's  between mile point 13.3 and mile point 16.6 is to allow joint sealing work at several bridges.

Drivers can expect to encounter one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers during daylight hours, weather permitting.

Officials say the lane restriction could continue into Wednesday.
