Graves Co. students watch US 68 Eggners Ferry Bridge assembly

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A group of about 20 students from Graves County High School visited the site where Hall Contracting is constructing a new span for the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge.

Structural steel for the new span is being assembled at the Eddyville Riverport in Lyon County.

The students watched as steel workers assembled vertical supports for the new truss section and hoisted them in place with a crane.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 Chief Engineer Jim LeFevre explained the process and answered detailed questions from members of three advanced math and engineering classes that joined forces for the field trip.

LeFevre explained that assembling the span on dry land, then taking it to the bridge on a barge to be lifted into place has helped to speed the construction process. The use of computer aided design also help to speed the process.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says they have a tentative plan to close KY 994 on Friday, April 20.

KYTC says Dunway Lane will also be closed to through traffic at this site and there will be a marked detour.

According to KYTC, Jim Smith Contracting Company, LLC, of Grand Rivers is the prime contractor on this $162,472 Highway Safety Improvement Project.  The project should be completed by about July 15, weather permitting.

KY 58 to be restricted for guardrail work

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says they will restrict traffic on KY 58 at the east edge of Mayfield starting Monday, April 16.

According to KYTC, this lane restriction at mile point 6.6 is to allow guardrail work on the Mayfeild Creek Bridge and bridge approaches just east of the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass.

KYTC says drivers should be prepared to encounter one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers between about 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The contractor expects to be working in this area for about two or three days.

Drivers should use appropriate caution in the work zone where equipment, flaggers and construction personnel  will be on the road in close proximity to traffic.

Traffic shift along KY 303 south of Mayfield pushed back to Tues.

MAYFIELD, KY (KFVS) - Due to a delay in completion of some work on Friday, KYTC says the contractor was unable to make the traffic shift as scheduled Monday morning.

According to KYTC, the traffic shift has been delayed until about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10.

The contractor had planned a traffic shift along KY 303/Cuba Road at the south edge of Mayfield in Graves County

According to Keith Todd with the Ky. Transportation Cabinet, this traffic shift is part of ongoing construction on the KY 80 Extension Project where it crosses KY 303.

He says KY 303 traffic will move to a diversion through the work area.

According to transportation officials, this  will allow the contractor to lower the existing KY 303 road bed to the new design grade.  Traffic on KY 303/Cuba Road will run on the diversion through the Summer months as the new construction continues.
