KYTC: Crews unable to pre-treat roads due to rain

KYTC: Crews unable to pre-treat roads due to rain

(KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says crews will be unable to pre-treat area highways because of rain that is expected to come before the snow Saturday night into Sunday morning.

According to KYTC, rain prior to a snow and ice event washes away salt deposited on road surfaces, making pre-treating ineffective.

They say snow and ice team members will continue to monitor the development of winter weather through the day Saturday. Highway crews will be on-call to respond should the winter precipitation become more organized and accumulate.

Drivers are reminded to closely monitor the weather forecast via area media outlets over the weekend and be aware of localized driving conditions which can change mile by mile as winter weather develops. KYTC says drivers should be aware of the potential for heavier snow accumulations to the east and south.

KYTC: Snow/ice team monitoring weather, road conditions

(KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says their snow/ice team will be monitoring the approaching weather system that may include snow.

KYTC says the National Weather Service indicates the main threat for Western Kentucky is along the Ohio River border counties for Tuesday morning.

Because of rain preceding the snow, KYTC says no pre-treating will be possible. Also, they say the road temps are expected to stay warm overnight.

The snow/ice team will be monitoring the transition from rain to snow and call in crews to respond appropriately in the early morning hours.

KYTC says drivers should watch area news media outlets for weather conditions in the morning, allow extra travel time on the morning commute and adjust driving speed to meet localized driving conditions.

They say remember, driving conditions can change mile by mile as snow develops. Use appropriate caution.

(KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says as you celebrate the holiday season enjoying traditions, food, family and fun, be reminded that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in force to arrest anyone caught driving drunk behind the wheel.

Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Director Bill Bell said the message is simple: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. He said as easy as that sounds, unfortunately many drivers still choose to jeopardize their safety and the safety of others on our roads by getting behind the wheel after drinking.

KYTC says 10 people were killed on Kentucky roadways last year during the Christmas and New Year's holiday. They say three of the deaths involved alcohol.

“This holiday season, the KOHS is honored to have a family from Kentucky help spread the message about the dangers of drinking and driving,” said Bell.

The KOHS recommends these tips for a safe holiday season:
