KYTC reminds drivers of highway hazards from roving deer

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has issued a reminder for drivers across the region to be on the lookout for deer crossing the roads, especially near dawn or dusk when visibility is the lowest.

KYTC says it is entering the peak of deer mating season which generates an uptick in car-deer collisions on state highways. They say about half of all deer-car collisions are reported in the last three months of the year.

KYTC District 1 Spokesman Keith Todd says a check of deer collisions reported from 2010 provides some perspective on what drivers are facing.  A review of police crash reports indicates Hopkins County and Henderson County top the list of Western Kentucky counties with the most deer-vehicle collisions.

KY 80 extension project traffic to be diverted

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet working on the KY 80 Extension Project south of Mayfield in Graves County, is planning a traffic shift for traffic on KY 303-Cuba Road on Monday, November 14, 2011.

Due to continuing work on the $12.5 million KY 80 Extension, traffic on KY 303-Cuba Road will be moved over to a diversion that runs parallel to the existing roadway to allow additional dirt work in the area.  Officials say this diversion for KY 303 is just south of Charles Drive.

Transportation officials say the diversion is part of ongoing work to extend KY 80, Murray-Mayfield Road from the intersection with the KY 121-Dick Castleman Bypass east of Mayfield extending southwestward to KY 303 in Graves County.

Single car crash sends Mo. girl to hospital

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - According to Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon, a single car crash on Monday sent a Missouri girl to the hospital.

The sheriff says at about 10 a.m. Mallory Fritz, 19, of Kennett, Mo. was driving her 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser eastbound on KY 94 East between the intersections of KY 303 and High Road. He says Fritz was driving from Kennett to Murray State University and apparently fell asleep at the wheel and drove off the right side of the road.

According to Redmon, the car hit a mailbox, jumped a creek and then hit a tree and earthen embankment. He says the car caught fire after hitting the tree and embankment.

The sheriff says Fritz was helped out of the car by local resident Terry McDermitt.

The Cuba and Sedalia Volunteer Fire Departments were both called to extinguish the fire.

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky State Police reports Wednesday that a Hickory woman was sent to the hospital with life threatening injuries on Sunday.

KSP says Anna Pritchett, 47, was driving her 1998 Mercury van southbound on KY 1241 when she dropped off the west side of the highway. They say she over corrected and crossed both lanes of KY 1241, left the east side of the road and traveled about 500 feet before overturning multiple times and coming to a final rest on the east side of the road.

According to KSP, Pritchett was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected during the rollover. Police say she was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center and later air lifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

The Graves County Sheriff Office helped at the scene and police say the investigation is ongoing.

Beshear, highway admin. unveils new I-69 signs

(KFVS) - Governor Steve Beshear and Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez unveiled one of the new I-69 signs going up on 38 miles of Western Kentucky Parkway and 17 miles of existing Interstate 24 on Tuesday.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says Kentucky now has 55 miles of Interstate 69.

Beshear noted that efforts will continue to gain interstate status for the remaining 100 miles of I-69 Corridor through 10 Western Kentucky counties between Henderson and Fulton.

According to KYTC, new signs will have the I-69 shield with a "formerly WK Pkwy" sign underneath to help avoid confusing cross-country travelers.

KOHS: Don't drink and drive on Halloween

KOHS: Don't drink and drive on Halloween

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Office of Highway Patrol is reminding everyone to keep the party off the road on Halloween.

Keith Todd with the Kentucky Department of Transportation says while New Year's has traditionally been a big day for partying, St. Patrick's Day and Halloween have been catching up in recent years with increasing numbers of DUI arrests.

“There isn’t a Halloween costume clever enough to hide an impaired driver who has made the poor decision to get behind the wheel,” said KOHS Director of Highway Safety Bill Bell. “Whether you’ve had one too many or way too many it is just not worth the risk. Remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving.”

The KOHS says Halloween night is often one of the deadliest nights of the year for impaired drivers.
