KSP reminds drivers to be on the lookout for deer

KSP reminds drivers to be on the lookout for deer

(KFVS) - Kentucky State Police are reminding drivers they will be seeing an increase movement of deer throughout the area as fall is in full swing.

According to KSP, deer season begins Nov. 10 and drivers are more likely to encounter the animals on or near roads.

Spokesperson for KSP, Sgt. Rick Saint-Blancard says drivers need to take extra precautions when driving during fall months.

“It is extremely important to recognize this ever-present risk, especially at this time of year when nearly fifty percent of all collisions with deer occur,” he said. “Last year, we had 2,938 deer-related collisions in Kentucky with three of those being fatal collisions."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are approximately 1 million deer related vehicle crashes each year that kill nearly 200 people, injure over 10,000 and result in over $1 billion in vehicle damage.

Saint-Blancard offered the following tips for drivers:

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Ms. Reba Wiggins' first grade class at Cuba Elementary has recently been studying animal habitats.

Micah Seavers visited the classroom and brought a family of opossums. While the students viewed the animals, Seavers answered questions and provided information about wildlife in the area.

KYTC reminds drivers of highway hazards from roving deer

KYTC reminds drivers of highway hazards from roving deer

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has issued a reminder for drivers across the region to be on the lookout for deer crossing the roads, especially near dawn or dusk when visibility is the lowest.

KYTC says it is entering the peak of deer mating season which generates an uptick in car-deer collisions on state highways. They say about half of all deer-car collisions are reported in the last three months of the year.

KYTC District 1 Spokesman Keith Todd says a check of deer collisions reported from 2010 provides some perspective on what drivers are facing.  A review of police crash reports indicates Hopkins County and Henderson County top the list of Western Kentucky counties with the most deer-vehicle collisions.
